Choro (pronounced SHOH-roh) is best described in American terms as "the New Orleans jazz of Brazil." It is a complex popular musical form based on improvisation, and like New Orleans jazz, blues, or ragtime, grew from a formalized musical structure and many worldly influences. On Wednesday, September 9th, students from the Pompano Beach High School’s International Affairs Magnet Program participated in a special Broward Center educational workshop with Clube do Choro de Miami. The group, comprised of Brazilian musicians living in Miami, presented an interactive lecture and demonstration exploring Brazilian music and rhythms. It was a very exciting program this morning and the kids appreciated hearing new music and learning a new clulture. The show truly showed how music can bring different people and cultures together.
The last picture is of a PBHS student playing sax with Clube do Choro de Miami, a thrill he is not sure to forget any time soon. This was really lots of fun.
