Each year, Pompano Beach High School honors veterans and remembers soldiers killed at the Fallen Heroes ceremony. At this ceremony, a flag is placed in the lawn area in front of the school auditorium in memory of each service member to have been killed since action started in Iraq and Afghanistan in 2003.

Also at this time , a United States flag, which has been used in service somewhere around the world, is retired. When retiring a U.S. flag, there much ritual. It is the belief that instead of letting a flag (which has served our country) slowly fall apart, it should be burned with as much ceremony as possible. That is what happens each year the day before Veterans Day at Pompano Beach High School.

The following pictures are of that ceremony, with comment descriptions below of what you are looking at.

Pictures 1-3: Flags with the name, rank, hometown and date killed in action of each service member since 2003 in our wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Picture 4:  When retiring a flag, each of the 13 stripes is cut from the flag while a famous passage is read, either from essay or speech, describing an ideal of our great country. Here is a picture of a young JROTC cadet cutting a stripe off of the flag and preparing it for the fire.

Picture 6: The urn of fire holding the remains of the flag being retired. A cadet has just put a portion of the flag into the fire and saluted it as it burns in honor. Eventually, after all stripes are burned, the stars will be placed into the fire as well.

Picture 7: After the flag has been retired, a NEW flag is unfolded for the first time. It is then folded back with great ritual then presented to a representative of the fallen heroes being honored. On this day, Mayor Lamar Fisher received the flag for all of the servicemen killed. Also, the mother of a serviceman killed in action received a flag to honor her son. TAPS is played after the ceremony.

This was a moving ceremony, well done by the JROTC of Pompano Beach High School and its leaders LTC Gregory Johnson and First Seargent Milton McGruder.

One of the great album covers of all time. This was designed by Hipgnosis, the same design firm that made some of the most famous album covers in Rock history for bands like Led Zeppelin, Genesis, Yes and Pink Floyd... just to name a few. This is classic.
